California voters rejected Proposition 32, which would have raised minimum wage to $18 an hour, CBS News projects. In the last decade, the state has doubled its minimum wage rate from $8 to $16 an hour.

Opponents said the rejection of Proposition 32 was a sign that Californians were unwilling to pay the higher prices that often accompany increases in the minimum wage. Californians, who have historically supported efforts to raise the minimum wage, were not swayed this time around.

Proposition 32 would have increased the current hourly wage floor by $2 for the lowest-income earners in the coming years.
