City and school leaders have reached an agreement to end a funding dispute, but the dollar amount has not yet been disclosed.

PROVIDENCE – The city on Wednesday agreed to provide its school district what is likely millions of dollars more in funding, and while the exact amount won’t be publicly released until Friday, Mayor Brett Smiley said it will require cuts in some city services and certainly a tax increase next year.

The Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) and the city of Providence reached an agreement Wednesday in their ongoing battle over funding for Providence’s public schools — but the compromise may have consequences for Providence taxpayers.

The deal follows two rulings by the Rhode Island Superior Court last week which found that the City was required to provide additional funding to the district. The PPSD is currently facing a nearly $11 million budget deficit and has proposed cuts to school sports, bus passes and some staff positions.

A court hearing is scheduled for Wednesday morning to determine how much Providence must pay the state-run Providence Public School District.
