John Amos, who starred as the family patriarch on the hit 1970s sitcom “Good Times” and earned an Emmy nomination for his role in the seminal 1977 miniseries “Roots,” has died.

Immediately following Good Times, there was no shortage of work for John Amos. In 1977, he was cast as the older Kunta Kinte in the groundbreaking miniseries Roots (and received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor for a Single Appearance in a Drama or Comedy Series).

John Amos, famous for his television role in the show Good Times, died. The late actor was 84 years old. John’s son Kelly Christopher Amos confirmed on Tuesday, October 1, that his father died months ago on August 21.
