In the 2017 TV series Emerald City, the Lion is a former guard in the Wizard's army who is cursed into the form of a beast for his actions against the former Royal Family of Oz.

The Cowardly Lion feels amazed to learn that small flowers almost killed him and small mice saved him. Back on the yellow brick road again, the friends get closer to the Emerald City. On this beautiful part of their walk, they notice that everything in the area is green.

The door to the Wiz's throne room apparently stays unlocked, but everyone in the City remains too scared to go through it. According to the Cowardly Lion, the Emerald City also has a movie theater and a bar, which the viewers never actually see themselves.
