Heretic is Morbid Angel’s seventh album, and it was the last album to feature Steve Tucker on vocals and bass for over a decade. It is notable for having some of the worst production in Morbid Angel history, as well as being, perhaps, the last creative peak for Trey Azagthoth.

Multiple editions of the album come with a second 18-track CD titled "Bonus Levels" (32:28) which contains unmixed instrumental versions of "Heretic" songs (1-6) and guitar solos ("lavas") from various songs (7-18).
